The UConn Department of Earth Sciences values diversity, prioritizes inclusion, and strives for justice and equity within our community and beyond. We embrace diversity in all forms and have zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or harassment. We believe that the best science arises from the integration of diverse ideas and experiences. Therefore, promoting and fostering diversity of all types is important to us.
We recognize that the Earth Sciences, including our community at UConn, is significantly underrepresented in groups that have historically been minoritized and marginalized in STEM. We are committed to the ongoing work of ensuring a positive, inclusive work environment and working toward broad access and support for inclusive participation in the Earth Sciences. The Department of Earth Sciences Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee works closely with DEI Initiatives in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at UConn in efforts aimed at broadening justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
UConn’s Land Acknowledgement Statement
We would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the territory of the Mohegan, Mashantucket Pequot, Eastern Pequot, Schaghticoke, Golden Hill Paugussett, Nipmuc, and Lenape Peoples, who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. We thank them for their strength and resilience in protecting this land, and aspire to uphold our responsibilities according to their example.
Specific Programs!
McNair Scholars Program
The McNair Scholars Program prepares talented, highly motivated UConn undergraduate students for doctoral studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. As part of UConn’s TRIO programs, McNair is open to low-income, first-generation college students or those from populations underrepresented in STEM graduate fields who are seeking to pursue a Ph.D. degree.
McNair Scholars are paired with faculty mentors for academic enrichment, research, and internships. Students also participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences designed to help them secure admission to doctoral programs and obtain financial resources for graduate study.
Pre-College Summer
UConn Pre-College Summer (PCS) is committed to providing a safe and supportive living-learning environment, allowing high school students to explore their academic interests, while gaining knowledge of institutional activities and social environments on a college campus. PCS serves as an exploratory experience where students will gain an understanding of the college classroom through interactions with engaging University faculty and explore the nuances of college-life and transitioning to college at a nationally ranked public University.
Early College Experience
UConn Early College Experience (UConn ECE) is a concurrent enrollment program that allows motivated high school students to take UConn courses at their high schools for both high school and college credit. Every course taken through UConn ECE is equivalent to the same course at the University of Connecticut. Students benefit by taking college courses in a setting that is both familiar and conducive to learning. The University of Connecticut certifies high school teachers to serve as UConn ECE Instructors and teach UConn courses. Established in 1955, UConn Early College Experience is the nation's longest running concurrent enrollment program and is accredited by The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships.
