• Description

  Cut block of coarse-grained, possibly oolitic limestone.  Classified as a grainstone, defined as a non-muddy, clast-supported sandstone consisting  limestone (calcite/arragonite) grains,  Pore spaces filled by  light-colored lime cement.  Massive and uniform in appearance. Fizzes with weak acid.

  Likely from northern Arkansas, a suggestion by state survey staff.  Paleoenvironment of  tropical-subtropical shallow seas on edge of carbonate bank with strong wave action.

• Geoheritage

  Such uniform limestones are commonly quarried for dimension stone because the rock is fairly soft and easily cut into the desired shape. The stone crumbles in a carbonized atmosphere.
